Take a look at the past at the Chinatown Heritage Center and retrace some
of Singapore's early pioneers.
Located in three nicely renovated shophouses on Pagoda Street, the
Chinatown Heritage Center rebuilds the original 1950s interior, offering a
rare view into Chinatown's early life.
Here, you can explore residential areas, shops, even the early nightlife of
these early residents. The whole building here tells a story, giving
amazing insight into some of the figures that helped build this modern
city.
You can trace the journey of those who leave their villages in China to
escape poverty, flood, and political turmoil and then go to Singapore to
seek a better life. Most of them inhabit the southern part of the Singapore
River, which became the forerunner of Chinatown
Many of them take the risk, risking their lives to come here, and you will
be able to see firsthand the things they face while exploring the cozy
space and narrow hallway in this building.
This historic center reopened in early 2016 after a massive renovation by
building a temporary exhibition area as well as space for community events.
Better yet, you can now taste the famous local dishes in Old Chang Kee's
Curry Times and buy limited-edition souvenirs designed by local designers
like Doe & Audrey and My Paper Earrings.
The renovated historic center also updates the Chinatown story, with new
exhibits about the region from the 1960s onwards. The exhibition also
features an amazing story from the Kong family, a family that once lived in
the same building that became the historic center you now enjoy.
There is no better time to visit the Chinatown Heritage Center. Do not
forget to buy a souvenir as you get out of here
