Charles Bridge is the most famous bridge that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. This historic bridge connects the two historic districts in Prague, the Old Town and Lesser Town. History of Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge was built in 1357 and completed in 1402. The bridge construction project sponsored by King Charles IV and led by Peter Parler who also is building St. Vitus Cathedral. Longitudinally over the 16 arches of the bridge, Charles Bridge has a length of 621 meters and a width of almost 10 m, wide enough for four chariots once to pass simultaneously

Charles Bridge has a bridge tower on either side that is used to keep the access to the bridge. One tower is located in the Old Town and the other two were in the Lesser Town. The tower in the Old Town, known as the Old Town Bridge Tower, built between 1370 to 1391 and is regarded as one of the civil gothic buildings the most amazing in the world


Two other towers located in the Lesser Town called Lesser Town Bridge Tower, and a combination of Judith Tower and taller towers, built in 1464 to counterbalance the tower in the Old Town. Judith first Tower is the gateway to the Judith Bridge, which was built in 1188. However, the tower is now a part of the Charles Bridge after the Judith Bridge swept away by floods in 1342

For more than three centuries, Charles Bridge became the only bridge between the two cities on the banks of the river Vltava, Lesser Town and Old Town. The first bridge is one of the main roads are congested with traffic, but has since improved between 1965 and 1978, only pedestrians are allowed to pass through this bridge.
