Discovered by an Indian Terena in 1924, the cave has in its interior a blue
lake with dimensions that make it one of the largest flooded cavities on
the planet. In 1992 a Franco-Brazilian expedition of espeleomerguladores
found a series of mammalian fossils - such as the saber-toothed tiger and
giant sloth - that lived during the Pleistocene geological period - 6,000
to 10,000 years ago.
After a descent of 100 m, you come across a lake of intensely blue waters,
whose depth is estimated to be 90 m. With its geological formations - not
only the roof and the floor of the cave are filled with speleothems of
various shapes and sizes - it attracts the attention of tourists and
researchers from all over the world. No one knows for sure where their
waters come from, it is believed that there is an underground river that
feeds the lake.
To get to the Grotto of the Blue Lagoon, it is made a walk of about 300
meters until the entrance of the cave. From there, you cross a staircase
dug into the earth that descends for about 100 meters until you come across
a lake of waters of an intense blue of 120 meters wide and whose estimated
depth is 90 meters. The silence in the place is great and the rays of sun
that penetrate the lake provoke an impressive visual effect, increased even
more by the millenary geological formations of various forms and sizes. No
one knows for sure where their waters come from. it is believed that there
is an underground river that supplies the lake.
For those who are interested in seeing the place, the best time for
visitation is in the mornings between December and January, when the sun
hits directly into the entrance of the cave, making the blue of the water
even more intense. In addition, it is recommended to close the tour in
advance, if you leave for the last hour, you run the risk of not being able
to visit the cave because it is a listed heritage, its access is restricted
and limited. In addition, it is important to state that children under five
years of age are expressly prohibited.
And, of course, visitors will want to take a lot of photos of the cave ...
so here's another tip: photos made with simpler cameras are not very good
because of the low lightness of the place. Ideally, you should bring a
camera with more features (such as night mode) and a tripod to prevent
blur. If they do not have such equipment, photos made by professional
photographers are sold to tourists on the spot.
